Celine Vs. Cyndi

By  |

Celine Dion’s new single, “I Drove All Night,” was originally done by Cyndi Lauper and Roy Orbison in the late 80s. Celine hits all the notes but her version is devoid of any emotion and sounds bland compared to earlier incarnations. Go back and listen to Cyndi sing it and you’ll hear yearning and passion in her voice. Even Roy Orbison’s rock-oriented version has more emotion then Celine’s. During recent concerts, Cyndi Lauper has been including it in her set list, maybe as a way to reclaim the song. Celine has charted well with the song and is at a high point in her career with her new Vegas show, but just because she can hit the notes doesn’t mean anything if there is no emotion behind the vocals. Celine has sung from the heart in the past so maybe it was just a bad day in the recording studio or maybe Cyndi’s was so good, it’s hard to beat.
