Col. Cammermeyer Joins UCLA Talk; ‘Serving In Silence’ Screening in WeHo

Col. Margarethe Cammermeyer, a decorated Vietnam veteran who won a landmark Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell case, will appear locally at two events this weekend in support of preserving LGBT history.

On Friday, May 16, Col. Cammermeyer will be joined by her attorney, Mary Newcombe, a UCLA alum, to discuss her court battle at UCLA’s Charles E Young Reference Library. Hosted by the UCLA Center for the Study of Women and sponsored by the Williams Institute, her appearance is part of a three-year project from UCLA Library, the June L. Mazer Lesbian Archive, and Christopher Street West, called “Making Invisible Histories Visible: Preserving the Legacy of Lesbian Feminist Activism and Writing in Los Angeles.”  The talk begins at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Saturday, May 17, is Armed Forces Day, and the June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives will host a special screening of “Serving In Silence,” the film starring Glenn Close as Col. Cammermeyer. The film depicts Col. Cammermeyer’s legal fight to remain in the military, as one of the few openly gay or lesbian people in the U.S. military during the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy that targeted LGBT service members. The event gets underway at 3 p.m. at West Hollywood Park Auditorium, 647 N. San Vicente Blvd. A $10 donation is requested, although no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
