Green Day’s Grammy(R) Nominated “American Idiot” Returns to the Top of the Charts

Green Day’s seven-time Grammy®-nominated album, “American Idiot,” returned to the top of the Billboard Album Chart today. The album has scanned over 2.0 units to date bringing the total to over five million worldwide since its release.

“American Idiot” was released on September 21st and debuted at Number One on the Billboard Charts, marking a first for the band in their 15-year career. The album also debuted at the top of the charts in the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and Australia. It spawned two Number One hits at multiple radio formats with singles “American Idiot” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” “American Idiot” received Grammy® nominations for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. “American Idiot” also received the nod in the Best Short Form Music Video as well as Producer of the Year, non-classical for Rob Cavallo.

As part of a comprehensive marketing campaign, “American Idiot” debuted with The Leak on MTV.com; premiered exclusively on MTVu, was deemed Buzzworthy by MTV; Artist of the Month on Launch, the music destination of Yahoo!; and received extensive media attention in both the alternative and mainstream press, gracing the covers of magazines such as Alternative Press, Spin, N.M.E., Kerrang, Guitar World, Bass Player and Drum. The band also recorded Sessions@AOL, which aired extensively on Fuse. They recently completed an arena tour of the United States, performed on Vh1’s “Big In 2004,” the “Billboard Music Awards,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” walked on to MTV’s “TRL” and Fuse’s “Daily Download” twice as well as performing at MTV’s “Iced Out New Years Eve.”
