Hold On! Wilson Phillips Headlines LA Pride in WeHo

By  |

Wilson Phillips, the legendary all-girl pop group, will headline the entertainment-packed LA Pride festival, June 12-14 in West Hollywood. Pauley Perrette (“NCIS”), Lisa Vanderpump and Peter Paige are celebrity hosts set for the Delta Airlines Main Stage that, in addition to Wilson Phillips, features Kesha (Saturday), country singer Ty Herndon and Fifth Harmony (Sunday), and Ana Barbara headlining the Latino Carnival stage (Sunday), and many others (see list below).

The festival kicks off June 12 with Free Friday, featuring the “Lavender Menace: A Celebration of Women” and the “Trans Party” in West Hollywood Park.

On Saturday a Family Skate will include cast members of ABC Family’s “The Fosters.”

Wilson Phillips shot to stardom in 1990 with their No. 1 hit “Hold On,” which won the Billboard Music Award for Hot 100 Single of the Year. The song reignited interest in the group in 2011 when it was featured in the film “Bridesmaids,” starring Kristin Wiig, Melissa McCarthy and Maya Rudolph. Wilson Phillips also made a cameo appearance in the film, and followed that with a new album in 2012.

This year (2015), Wilson Phillips sang backup on Rihanna’s hit song “FourFiveSeconds.”

Wilson Phillips consists of three daughters some of the music industry’s best known performers: Carnie and Wendy Wilson are the daughters of Beach Boy Brian Wilson and Marilyn Rovell of The Honeys, and Chynna Phillips is the daughter of the Mamas & the Papas’ John and Michelle Phillips.

After two albums, the group split for 10 years before regrouping in 2004. Carnie Wilson has been a supporter of the Los Angeles LGBT Center, appearing at the annual Evening With Women fundraiser in the years since singer-songwriter Linda Perry made it a hot ticket for the industries top female performers.

Recently, Carnie Wilson recounted to Billboard how Kanye West approached them to sing on Rihanna’s “FourFiveSeconds.”

“He said, ‘When I think of authenticity and I think of angelic, I think of you,'” said Wilson. “He was really shy … then all of a sudden, when he started playing all these songs, he was dancing around the room…. When he would press play, it was like, out came the artist and the creativity was just really there.”
The song peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard chart. There are rumors of a sixth album from Wilson Phillips, and Carnie let it be known they wouldn’t mind having Kanye West at the helm.

“I would love to see what he would have in mind because he thinks outside the box,” she told Billboard magazine. “We’re so lucky to be here 25 years later, on tour with people still supporting our sound and music. This is such a blessing.”

LA Pride festivities begin at 5 p.m. Friday, and also include the Pride Parade on Sunday down Santa Monica Boulevard. The entertainment lineup is below. For more info see lapride.org.
