“Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster” Wins Best Documentary

The critically acclaimed documentary “Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster” has won the award for Best Documentary at the prestigious Independent Spirit Awards, which took place over the weekend in Los Angeles, CA.

The film, directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky (“Brother’s Keeper,” “Paradise Lost”), offers a revealing behind-the-scenes look at Metallica as they confront personal demons and their relationships with each other. The band’s Lars Ulrich had this to say about the award, “It’s both exciting and gratifying to know that the Independent Spirit Awards has acknowledged our film as the Best Documentary of 2004. Never could we have imagined the impact this film would have on our lives, and the lives of others. Metallica has always tried to push the envelope as much as possible. Exposing ourselves to such a degree in this film was never really part of the plan — and none of us had any idea of how it would turn out. However, it worked out to be something truly special for all of us. Along with all of the positive feedback that the film has generated from the critics and fans alike, winning this award is truly special.”

As for the critical acclaim, Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly said of the film, “Epic storytelling…’Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster’ is one of the most revelatory rock portraits ever made.” Details magazine said the film is “An instant and incendiary classic.” Sharon Waxman of the New York Times gushed the that film is “entertaining, moving and historically significant…(it) chronicles the intimate emotions of the most successful heavy metal band of all time.”
